It sits in northern India and parts of Pakistan. It also covers Nepal and Bangladesh. The name comes from two big rivers. These are the Indus and the Ganges.

A third river, the Brahmaputra, also helps form this land. These rivers carry silt to the area. Silt is fine soil left by water. This makes the ground very fertile for farming.

Because the soil is so good, many people live here. In fact, nearly one-seventh of all people live in this region. It is a very busy place with many large cities.

The land has different parts. Near the Himalayan mountains, there is a strip called Bhabar. This area is full of stones and rocks. Next is the Terai. This part is wet and has thick green plants. Further south is the Bangar. This is a large, rich area for crops. Near the rivers, you find the Khadir. This area has new silt from the water. The west is much drier. It even includes the Thar Desert.
