Today, Indy is famous for many things. It is known for auto racing. The Indianapolis 500 is a very big race.

As the 19th century ended, the city entered a period of great prosperity. By 1880, Indianapolis was the third-largest pork packing city in the world. It also became a massive railroad center. 

Today, Indianapolis is a large and diverse metropolitan area. According to the 2020 census, the city proper has 887,642 residents. The entire metropolitan area is home to 2.1 million people. 
Indianapolis is also known for its many cultural and historic landmarks. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is a famous symbol of the city. It holds the largest collection of veteran monuments in the U.S. outside of Washington, D.C. The city is also home to the world's largest children's museum.
