It serves as the nation's political, industrial, and financial heart. The city is located within the Santiago Basin. This basin sits in the Chilean Central Valley. To the east, the massive Andes mountains rise up. To the west, the Chilean Coastal Range forms a boundary.

The metropolitan area, known as Greater Santiago, includes over forty communes. This large urban area holds more than one-third of Chile's population. It also generates about 45% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GDP is a way to measure the value of goods and services produced.

The geography of the valley shapes how the city lives and breathes. Most of the urban area sits at a specific height above sea level. Recent growth has pushed buildings toward the Andean foothills. The climate is semi-arid with Mediterranean characteristics. This means summers are warm and dry. Winters are cool and bring more rain.

Because the city is in an enclosed valley, air can get trapped. This often leads to chronic air pollution and winter smog. The Mapocho River flows through the city and provides a central landscape. Many parks, like Parque Forestal, sit along its banks.

Human history in this basin stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows people arrived around the 10th millennium BC. These early groups were nomadic hunter-gatherers. They traveled from the coast to the interior to hunt guanacos. These animals are relatives of llamas. By 800 AD, permanent agricultural villages appeared near the Mapocho River. These settlers grew maize, potatoes, and beans. They also domesticated camelids, which are animals like llamas. Later, the Inca Empire ruled the area. The Incas used the valley as a junction for the Inca Trail. They even built fortifications like the El Plomo hill sanctuary.

The modern city began with the Spanish conquest. Pedro de Valdivia founded the city on 12 February 1541.

In 1541, the city was destroyed by these forces. However, the Spanish rebuilt it over time. The city also struggled with floods and massive earthquakes. A devastating earthquake in 1647 killed over 600 people.

Santiago played a vital role in Chile's independence. The First Government Junta was proclaimed there in 1810.

This event started the path toward a free nation. Patriot forces eventually secured victory at the Battle of Maipú in 1818. Following this, the city expanded rapidly during the 19th century. Railway construction and new state institutions helped the city grow. It became the permanent political center of the Republic. Today, the presidential palace and the judiciary are located here. While the National Congress meets in Valparaíso, Santiago remains the administrative core.

The modern skyline shows Santiago's economic power. The city has high-rise business districts like Sanhattan.
