Many people call the city "Indy" for short. The city uses the official slogan "Crossroads of America." This phrase describes its role as a major transportation hub. It is positioned near several large North American markets. This location has helped the city grow into a major center for trade.

The history of the land began long before the city was built. Indigenous peoples inhabited the area as early as 10,000 BC. The Miami Nation of Indiana and the Lenape people held primary claims to the territory. In 1818, the Treaty of St. Mary's was signed. This treaty required the tribes to relinquish their lands in central Indiana.

Following this, European and American settlers arrived in the area. Some settlers were descendants of families from northwestern Europe. Many early immigrants were Protestant, though many Irish and German immigrants were Catholic. Historians debate which family arrived first. Some point to the Pogue family in 1819. Others suggest the McCormick family settled near the White River in 1820.

Indianapolis was established as a planned city in 1821.

The Indiana General Assembly chose this site to be the new state capital. Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham designed the city layout. They used a grid system to organize the streets.

The city's name comes from the state name, Indiana, and the Greek word "polis," which means city. Jeremiah Sullivan is credited with coining the name. The city grew quickly due to the National Road and later the arrival of railroads. These developments turned the settlement into a manufacturing and commercial center.

The American Civil War was a significant period for the city. Indianapolis remained mostly loyal to the Union cause. Governor Oliver P. Morton helped make the city a rallying place for Union troops. President-elect Abraham Lincoln visited the city in February 1861.

During the war, the city became a vital logistics hub. It served as a headquarters for state volunteer soldiers. Between 1860 and 1870, the population of the city more than doubled. In 1865, a massive crowd of 100,000 people gathered to watch Lincoln's funeral train pass by. This event showed the deep connection between the city and the national struggle.

As the 19th century ended, the city entered a period of great prosperity. By 1880, Indianapolis was the third-largest pork packing city in the world. It also became a massive railroad center.
