Indentured servitude was a special kind of work contract. A person signed a paper called an indenture.

This paper meant they would work without a salary for a set number of years. People often did this to pay for a trip to a new land. Some people chose this to pay off a debt. Others were forced into it as a punishment by a judge.

This system was different from slavery, but it was still very hard.

How the system worked depended on the contract. Most contracts lasted for five years at a time. Some workers could even extend their work for another five years.

Many contracts promised a free trip home once the work was done. However, there were very few rules to protect workers from bad masters. This often led to people being treated poorly. Sometimes, workers were even given poor land when they finally became free.

In the American colonies, this way of working was very common. Between the 1630s and the American Revolution, many Europeans arrived this way.

About 48% of voluntary European arrivals were indentured servants. Most of these workers were young, with about 75% being under age 25. Some people were even tricked or kidnapped to work. A man named William Thiene once took 840 people from Britain in one year.

This system also happened in the Caribbean islands. Before 1840, about 500,000 Europeans went there as indentured servants.

Later, after slavery was abolished in 1833, many people from India were moved to the Caribbean.

Women were often recruited because there were many men already in the colonies. Some women even moved to escape bad relationships at home.

Over time, the system began to change and fade away. In America, a servant uprising called Bacon's Rebellion caused people to distrust this labor.

New laws also helped the system decline. The UK passed a law in 1803 to make ship travel more expensive. In 1833, an American law made it harder to punish people for running away. Finally, the Thirteenth Amendment made involuntary servitude illegal in the United States.
