This fish has a very interesting way of moving through the water. The ilish is anadromous, which means it lives in the sea but swims up rivers to spawn. Spawning is when fish lay their eggs to make new babies.

They swim up rivers for about 50 to 100 km during the monsoon seasons. This usually happens between June and September or January and April. They move from the salty ocean into freshwater rivers to do this. After they lay their eggs, the fish return to the sea. Young fish that are still small are often called jatka in Bangladesh.

To stay healthy, the ilish must find plenty of tiny food to eat. They are filter feeders, which means they strain food from the water. They use gill rakers, which are small comb-like parts in their gills, to catch food.

Their diet mostly consists of plankton like green algae and tiny creatures called diatoms. Young fish like to eat small crustaceans to help them grow. Adults mostly eat algae as they get bigger. They often look for this food in the muddy bottoms of the water. This way of eating helps them stay oily and tender.

Many people have worked hard to protect these fish for a long time. In 2002, the government in Bangladesh made rules to stop overfishing. They put a ban on catching young jatka fish and adult fish that are needed for breeding. They also started a fishing ban during the breeding season.

These rules helped the fish numbers grow in Bangladesh. While fish numbers fell in ten other countries, the catch in Bangladesh grew every year. This helps the 450,000 people who catch the fish to earn a living. It also helps millions of other people involved in the trade.

Cooking the ilish is a big part of many different cultures. People can cook this fish in more than 50 different ways.

In Bengal, a famous dish is called Shorshe Ilish, which uses mustard seeds. It is very oily, so you do not need much oil to cook it.
