Basa fish eat plants to stay healthy. They begin to spawn when the flood season starts. You can see the young fish by mid-June. They are usually about 1 centimeter long then.

Many different names exist for this fish. In North America, people call it swai or bocourti. In the United Kingdom, it is often called river cobbler. Some people even call it panga. In Asian markets, you might see it called patin. Sometimes, other fish are wrongly called basa. This includes the iridescent shark or the yellowtail catfish.

There was once a big disagreement called the "catfish war." In 2002, the United States had a problem with imported fish. They said Vietnamese exporters were being unfair. In 2003, the U.S. Congress passed a new law. This law said these fish could not be called "catfish." Only fish from the Ictaluridae family can use that name. Because of this, exporters now use names like basa or swai.

Some groups have concerns about how these fish are farmed. Groups like OceanWise worry about pollution in the water. They also worry about diseases spreading to wild fish. The Monterey Bay Aquarium puts the species on a "red flag" list. However, some tests show different results. Supermarkets in the UK found no toxic contaminants in their fish. In a blind taste test, 58 people tested the fish. They liked the imported basa three times more than U.S. catfish.
