He is widely known by his alias, Igor Strelkov. Strelkov is a name that translates to "Rifleman" or "Shooter." He has also been called "Igor the Terrible." Girkin has played significant roles in several major conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine. He is a self-described Russian nationalist. His actions have led to legal consequences in both international courts and within Russia itself.

Girkin's interest in military matters began during his time as a student. He attended the Moscow State Institute for History and Archives. There, he focused intensely on military history. He also joined a student group that advocated for monarchism, which is a system of government led by a king or queen. During the 1990s, he worked as a writer for the Russian newspaper *Zavtra*. He also wrote about conflicts in the Middle East for the Abkhazian Network News Agency. These early years helped shape his political and military views.

From 1996 to March 2013, Girkin served as an officer in the Russian Federal Security Service, or FSB. The FSB is Russia's main security agency. He reportedly worked in a unit that handles international terrorism. During his service, he participated in military campaigns in Chechnya. Human rights groups have raised serious concerns regarding his actions during this time. For example, Alexander Cherkasov of the group Memorial linked him to the disappearance of residents in the Vedensky District. Girkin later confirmed he was present in the area during the conflict in 2001.

In early 2014, Girkin became a central figure in the political changes in Crimea. He worked as a security advisor for a Russian businessman named Konstantin Malofeev.

Girkin helped lead armed militias that took control of the Crimean parliament in Simferopol. He admitted that his militants forced local lawmakers to vote for certain actions. This included a referendum to separate Crimea from Ukraine. His involvement helped facilitate the Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

Following the events in Crimea, Girkin moved to eastern Ukraine to lead militant groups. In April 2014, he led a unit of fifty heavily armed men to seize the town of Sloviansk. This action is credited with helping to spark the Donbas War. Because of his influence, he was appointed Minister of Defense for the Donetsk People's Republic. This group was a puppet state, meaning it was controlled by Russia. His leadership in this region made him a target for many international sanctions. The United States, European Union, and several other nations placed sanctions on him for his role in the war.

In August 2014, Girkin was dismissed from his position following a major tragedy. Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by militants in the region. This event resulted in the deaths of 298 people.

Dutch prosecutors charged Girkin with mass murder. While he admitted to "moral responsibility" for the event, he denied being the person who pushed the button. On November 17, 2022, a court in the Netherlands convicted him in absentia. He was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the deaths of those 298 passengers and crew.

After the 2014 conflicts, Girkin returned to Russia as a political activist. He used the internet as a "milblogger" to share his views on the ongoing war in Ukraine. Although he supported the war, he frequently criticized the Russian military for being incompetent. In April 2023, he joined a hardline group known as the Club of Angry Patriots. He also began publicly criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin. This led to his arrest by Russian authorities on July 21, 2023. He was charged with inciting extremism and was sentenced to four years in prison in January 2024.
