The Wagner Group, officially known as PMC Wagner, is a Russian state-funded private military company. A private military company, or PMC, is a group of armed personnel employed by a business rather than a national government.

This organization has functioned as a proxy for the Russian government. A proxy is a person or group that acts on behalf of another. By using Wagner, the Russian state can maintain plausible deniability during foreign military operations. This means the government can claim it is not directly involved in a conflict. This structure also helps hide the actual number of Russian casualties during foreign interventions.

The group's history began during the 2014 annexation of Crimea. It first appeared during the war in Donbas to support Russian separatist forces in Ukraine.

The organization grew significantly over several years. In early 2016, the group had approximately 1,000 employees. By December 2017, that number had risen to 6,000. During the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the group's strength expanded even more. By the end of 2022, its numbers in Ukraine were estimated between 20,000 and 50,000. Wagner became a major assault force, particularly during the Battle of Bakhmut.

For much of its existence, the group's leadership was not clearly defined. Two men were central to its operation: Yevgeny Prigozhin and Dmitry Utkin.

Prigozhin was a businessman who served as the financier and the public face of the group. Because his catering businesses hosted dinners for President Vladimir Putin, he was often called "Putin's chef." While Prigozhin provided the money, Dmitry Utkin provided the military expertise. Utkin was a veteran who had served as a lieutenant colonel and a Spetsnaz GRU commander. The group's name likely comes from Utkin's own alias, "Wagner."

The group operates through a complex network of companies rather than a single corporation. This includes entities like Concord Management and Consulting. This sprawling structure makes it difficult for Western governments to restrict Wagner's activities. The group has also used shell companies to trade in natural resources. A shell company is a business that exists mainly on paper to hide ownership or money trails. For example, a company called Meroe Gold acted as a shell for Wagner in Sudan. This allowed the group to use Western banking systems, such as JP Morgan Chase, to process payments. This financial access helped the group establish a foothold in Africa.

Wagner has been active in many different regions, including Syria, Libya, and Mali.

In Africa, the group often provides security to friendly regimes. In exchange for this security, these regimes sometimes grant Wagner contracts for gold and diamond mining. The group's presence has been noted in many countries, including the Central African Republic and Sudan.

Some members have been linked to far-right movements. Additionally, the unit has faced serious accusations of war crimes. These include murder, torture, and the robbery of civilians. These reports suggest the group often operated with little oversight.

Recruitment and training involve very strict protocols. New recruits often train at a facility near the village of Molkino.

During training, recruits are forbidden from using the internet or social media. They must surrender their passports and mobile phones to the company. In return, they receive a nameless dog tag with a personal number. They must also sign a 10-year confidentiality agreement. If a recruit breaks these rules, the company can end their contract without pay. The average age of a Wagner contractor is approximately forty years old. Most members are Russian, but they come from as many as fifteen different countries.

In June 2023, the group's relationship with the Russian state collapsed. Yevgeny Prigozhin began publicly criticizing the Russian Defense Ministry. He eventually accused the government of lying about the reasons for the invasion of Ukraine. On June 23, 2023, Prigozhin led an armed rebellion.

Wagner units seized the city of Rostov-on-Don and moved toward Moscow. The mutiny ended the next day through an agreement. The mutineers were allowed to avoid prosecution if they joined the Defense Ministry or moved to Belarus. However, on August 23, 2023, Prigozhin and other leaders died in a plane crash. Western intelligence suggested an explosion caused the crash. Since then, reports suggest Pavel Prigozhin, Yevgeny's son, has taken command.
