It began after a crisis in Portugal. Three people claimed the throne. Philip II of Spain won the fight. He became the king of both lands. This was a personal union. This means the lands were still separate. They kept their own laws and money. They also had their own government.

Philip II and his heirs ruled many places. They had lands on every continent. The Spanish kings used councils to help them. A council is a group of people who give advice. The Council of Portugal helped with big decisions.

Portugal kept its own leaders in Lisbon. These leaders were called viceroys. They acted for the king. The Spanish kings let the Portuguese rule their own empire. This helped keep things running well for a while.

But things changed over time. The Dutch Republic began to attack Portuguese colonies. This made the union weaker. Finally, a new ruling family took over in Portugal. John IV became the new king. This ended the union.
