Iberian Union

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Iberian Union was a special time in history. It lasted from 1580 to 1640. During these years, the kings of Spain also ruled Portugal. This was called a personal union. This means the two lands shared one king. However, they were not the same country. Portugal and Spain remained separate states. They kept their own laws and their own money. They also kept their own ways of governing.

This union began because of a big problem in Portugal. In 1578, a young king named Sebastian died in a battle. This left no clear person to rule next. Three different people claimed they should be the new king. One was Philip II, the king of Spain. He marched into Portugal to take the throne. He won a fight at the Battle of Alcântara. In 1581, the leaders in Tomar recognized him as the king. This started the rule of the Habsburg family over Portugal.

Managing so many lands was a very hard job. The kings ruled over many different places. These included Castile, Aragon, Portugal, Italy, Flanders-Burgundy, and the Indies. To help them, the kings used groups called councils. A council is a group of people who give advice. The Council of Portugal was made in 1582. It helped the king make big decisions about justice and money. The king stayed in Madrid, which was the permanent capital.

Even though they had one king, Portugal kept much of its power. The Spanish kings respected the rules made at Tomar. They let Portuguese people hold many important jobs. The king often sent a viceroy to live in Lisbon. A viceroy is a leader who acts for the king. During the 60 years of the union, there were 13 viceroys. There were also four different groups called regency councils. This helped Portugal manage its own empire and its spice trade.

Eventually, the union began to face many troubles. The Dutch Republic started to attack Portuguese colonies. This happened because of the Dutch Revolt against Spain. These attacks made the Portuguese empire much weaker. People in Portugal wanted to rule themselves again. They chose a new ruling family called the House of Braganza. John IV became the new king of Portugal. This change ended the long period of the Iberian Union.
