Although Cerro Machín has been dormant for 800 years, it remains geologically active. In 2007, a steam column 400 meters high rose from its crater. Scientists at Ingeominas classify the volcano with a status of "III – Changes in behavior of volcanic activity." However, maps show that an eruption would not affect the city of Ibagué.

History shows how the city's location changed due to conflict. A Spanish captain named Andrés López de Galarza founded the settlement on 14 October 1550. At that time, it was called San Bonifacio de Ibagué del Valle de las Lanzas. The original site was near the municipality of Cajamarca, west of the current city. The local indigenous Pijaos people, led by cacique Ibagué, resisted Spanish colonization. Because of this resistance, the city was re-founded in its current location on 7 February 1551. Later, from April to December 1854, Ibagué briefly served as the capital of New Granada. This happened following a coup d'etat by General José María Melo. In 1908, the city was officially designated as the capital of the newly created Tolima department.

The economy of Ibagué is built on several important sectors. It relies heavily on industry, tourism, and agriculture. The city is part of the Colombian coffee growing axis. Its textile industry is a major force, ranking as the third largest in Colombia. Ibagué is also recognized for its business environment. The World Bank's "Doing Business" report ranks it highly for investment and ease of doing business. In fact, it tops the national rankings after the city of Manizales. The World Trade Center Association even chose Ibagué as a site for a headquarters. It joins Bogotá and Cali as one of only three such locations in the country.

Culture and music are central to the identity of the city. Ibagué is famously known as "The Musical Capital of Colombia and America." Education is also a major pillar of the community. The University of Tolima was founded in 1945 and became a state university in 1954. The University of Ibagué is another key educational institution.
