The history of the region began with indigenous activity. People originally extracted gold from alluvial deposits. This activity occurred mainly in the La Rosita ravine. Bucaramanga was officially founded on December 22, 1622. For a long time, the town of Girón was more significant. Bucaramanga did not overtake Girón in population or economy until the early 19th century. Until 1778, the area was considered an indigenous town. In 1779, it became a Parish. It was named the Parish of Our Lady of Chiquinquira and San Laureano de la Real de Minas de Bucaramanga. In 1886, political reorganization made Bucaramanga the departmental capital.

Industry plays a massive role in the local economy. The footwear industry has gained national and international recognition. The Footwear Manufacturers' Association, known as Asoinducals, is located here. The city exports shoes to many countries. These include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Italy, and the United States.

There is also a large clothing industry. The city hosts the International Exhibition of Children's Fashion. This is the only exhibition of its kind in Latin America. Many technological research centers also operate in the city. They study energy, gas, oil, and leather. The city is also a base for the Colombian Petroleum Institute. This is the research branch of the state oil company, Ecopetrol.

Transportation connects the city to the rest of the country. The Palonegro International Airport serves the metropolitan area.

It opened in 1974 and is located near Lebrija. For travel within the city, people use Metrolínea. This is an Integrated Mass Transit System. Construction began in 2006. Ruta Nacional 45A connects the city to Bogotá and the Caribbean coast.

Education is a significant part of life in Bucaramanga. The city has many universities that give it a good reputation. One major institution is the Industrial University of Santander. It offers 95 different degrees. This university includes colleges for health sciences, humanities, and engineering. It has nearly 14,000 registered students. The university also has 22,000 alumni. This institution helps support the city's growth as a center for research and professional skill.
