The history of the area began with ancient cultures. The Quimbaya and Pijao people lived here long ago. They were famous for their skills as goldsmiths. In 1540, Marshal Jorge Robledo founded the city of Cartago. This original city was later moved in 1691. In 1863, settlers returned to the ruins of ancient Carthage. They established new huts and blessed them in August. The settlement was called Carthage for six years. In 1869, it was renamed Villa de Pereira. 
The city was named after Francisco Pereira Martínez. He was a lawyer and a landowner. He supported the independence of the city. In the 1920s, settlers from Antioquia arrived. They moved there for the fertile volcanic soil. They grew high-quality coffee in the Andean soil. This helped develop the local economy. During the 1950s, the population quadrupled. Thousands of Colombians arrived during a period of political struggle. This created a diverse national melting pot.
Today, Pereira has a very diverse economy. The tertiary sector is the largest part. It accounts for 68.1% of the GDP. The secondary sector makes up 26.2%. The primary sector accounts for 5.7%. Trade is a major source of employment. Many people work in large shopping centers. The city also has a significant urban identity. In 2005 and 2006, the city entered an economic boom. This brought new housing and retail development. 
There are many modern features in the city. The Megabús is the main public transport system. Students attend the Technological University of Pereira.
