Iago is a famous villain from a play by William Shakespeare.

He is a soldier who serves a leader named Othello. Iago is known as a very tricky person. He acts like a loyal and good friend to everyone. People even call him "honest Iago" because they trust him so much.

This trust is how he manages to trick the other characters. He uses his reputation for honesty to hide his bad plans. This makes him one of the most sinister characters in literature.

Iago works very hard to ruin Othello's life. First, he tries to get a better job as a lieutenant. He is angry because Michael Cassio got the job instead. Iago uses a plan to make Cassio lose his position.

After that, he starts a second, bigger plan. He wants to make Othello believe his wife, Desdemona, is unfaithful. He even tricks his own wife, Emilia, into helping him. He has her take a special handkerchief from Desdemona. Then, he tells Othello he saw the cloth with Cassio. This web of lies leads to many deaths in the story.

Shakespeare wrote this play around the years 1601 to 1604. The role of Iago was likely first played by Robert Armin. He was an actor who often played smart clown roles.

Many famous actors have played Iago on stage and in films. Edwin Booth and Frank Finlay are two notable names. In 1995, Kenneth Branagh played him in a movie. Other actors like Ian McKellen and Daniel Craig have also taken the role. Even modern versions like the movie Omkara use his character.

Iago is a very large part of the play. He actually has 1,097 lines in the script.

This means he has more lines than the main character, Othello. Scholars have spent a long time studying why he is so mean. Some think he is just a person who likes to take chances. Others believe he is a person who feels no guilt at all. One critic called his evil a "motiveless malignity." This means he might cause trouble for no real reason.

We can see how Iago's character connects to many different ideas. Some people think he acts out of fear of being seen as less important. Others think he is simply jealous of the beauty and goodness in others.

In an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, Iago explains his dark beliefs. He sings about believing in a cruel god. This shows how different artists imagine his mind. Even today, people still debate what truly drives his actions. His complex personality makes him a character that people never forget.
