First, Boito had to write the libretto. This took many years of writing and revising. Then, Verdi had to sit down to compose the music. He worked in three main stages. The first part was a short time in Genoa in March 1884. The main part happened in Genoa from December 1884 to April 1885. Finally, he finished more work at Sant' Agata in late 1885.

After his successful opera Aida in 1871, he stopped composing. His publisher, Giulio Ricordi, did not want him to quit. Ricordi spent ten years trying to persuade him. He even tried to use Verdi's wife, Giuseppina, to help. Ricordi also suggested working with Boito to spark interest. Eventually, the idea of the Shakespeare play convinced Verdi to return.
