This block was split between two men named Bowerbank and Mantell. At first, experts thought it was just a young Iguanodon. Then, Thomas Henry Huxley studied it in 1867. He realized it was a totally different animal. In 1869, he officially named the new species Hypsilophodon foxii. He named it to honor the man who found the skull, William Fox.

Many different scientists helped us understand this dinosaur over the years.

John Whitaker Hulke studied new specimens in 1873 and 1874. He helped prove that Hypsilophodon was its own special group. Later, researchers like Peter Malcolm Galton looked at the bones again. Galton did important work starting in 1967. He helped clear up old mistakes about where the dinosaur lived. He also looked at a specimen found in South Dakota. This specimen was called Hypsilophodon wielandi, but many now think it is different.

Physically, Hypsilophodon was a bipedal animal, meaning it walked on two legs. This anatomy allowed it to be quite agile and quick. It possessed a pointed head with a sharp, toothless premaxilla. This structure functioned like a beak, similar to the beak of a modern parrot.

This specialized beak was used to bite off plant material for food. While older studies suggested much larger sizes, modern research provides a clearer picture. Most typical specimens are about 1 meter long. The largest known individual, specimen NHMUK PV R 5829, had a femur measuring 202 millimeters. This suggests a maximum length of approximately 1.8 meters.

The history of discovering Hypsilophodon is a complex scientific debate. In 1849, workers uncovered the Mantell-Bowerbank block from the Wessex Formation.

This large stone block was split between two naturalists, James Scott Bowerbank and Gideon Mantell. The larger half contained seventeen vertebrae and parts of the pelvis. The smaller half contained eleven caudal vertebrae and hindleg remains. Initially, Richard Owen studied these pieces in 1855. He incorrectly concluded that the fossils belonged to a young Iguanodon. It took several years of careful study to prove otherwise.

Thomas Henry Huxley played a crucial role in defining this new genus. In 1867, he compared the vertebrae and metatarsals to those of Iguanodon. He concluded the bones belonged to a different animal entirely. The following year, Huxley examined a fossil skull found by William Fox.

Huxley noticed the unique dentition and the beak-like premaxilla. He officially named the species Hypsilophodon foxii in 1869. The name honors Fox, who discovered many specimens in the Cowleaze Chine area. Huxley also determined the dinosaur belonged to the family Iguanodontidae, which includes Iguanodon and Hadrosaurus.

Scientific opinions on the dinosaur's identity were mixed for many years. Some paleontologists, like William Boyd Dawkins and Harry Seeley, supported Huxley's new genus. However, others like William Fox and Richard Owen remained skeptical. Fox even returned his skull specimen to Owen for further study. In 1873, John Whitaker Hulke published descriptions of new specimens from the same beds. Hulke eventually shifted his view to support Huxley. By 1874, Hulke used vertebral characters to prove Hypsilophodon was a distinct genus. He later published a full osteology of the species in 1882.

Modern research has helped correct many long-standing misconceptions. Older studies incorrectly claimed Hypsilophodon was an armored or arboreal animal. Arboreal means it lived in trees, but we now know it was a ground-dweller. Researchers also once thought it lived in many different areas. However, current evidence shows authentic fossils are only found on the Isle of Wight.

Some fossils from mainland Europe or Spain were once called Hypsilophodon. Peter Malcolm Galton concluded these actually belonged to different, related species like Valdosaurus. This focus on specific locations helps scientists understand exactly where these animals lived.

There was also a debate regarding a second species, Hypsilophodon wielandi. This specimen was found in 1900 in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Some scientists thought this suggested a land bridge between North America and Europe. They believed the dinosaur populations on both continents were very similar. However, Galton's research in 2009 suggested this species might not be valid. He noted that the bone features used to identify it were actually variable. He suggested the specimen might instead belong to a different genus called Zephyrosaurus. This highlights how new evidence constantly refines our understanding of prehistoric life.
