Long ago, hyenas were different. They lived in jungles 22 million years ago. Some early hyenas were thin and looked like civets. Later, they split into two groups. One group was dog-like and very fast. The other group was built to crush bones.

Most dog-like hyenas died out. Only the aardwolf survived. The aardwolf is small. It eats termites, which are tiny insects.

The bone-crushing hyenas stayed strong. They became top scavengers. Scavengers are animals that eat meat left by others.

Spotted hyenas are very social. This means they live in teams. They hunt in packs to find food. They also have strong teeth. These teeth help them eat quickly. Hyenas are a vital part of the wild. They help keep nature in balance.
