Hydraulic manifold

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A hydraulic manifold is a very important part of a machine. It helps control how fluid flows through a hydraulic system. You can think of it like a switchboard for electricity. It tells the fluid where to go and how much to flow. This part connects pumps to other parts called actuators. Without it, the machine would not work well.

This part works by using many different valves. These valves are all connected to each other inside. The manifold is a solid block of metal. It has many paths drilled through the middle. These paths connect to openings called ports. A manifold has one or more large pipes. These large pipes are called a barrel or a main. Many smaller pipes and ports connect to these main pipes at junctions.

An operator can control the manifold quite easily. They sit in a cabin and use levers. These levers are connected to the manifold. When the operator moves a lever, the manifold changes. It can turn the fluid flow on or off. It can also divert the flow to a new place. This lets the machine do many different tasks.

One great example is a machine called a backhoe loader. This machine has a front bucket and a back bucket. The manifold controls the telescopic arms for these buckets. It can send fluid to the front arms. It can also send fluid to the back arms. This makes the buckets move exactly how the driver wants. It is a very helpful way to manage power.

Many machines use these metal blocks to function. They help turn fluid power into movement. You might see them in big construction tools. They make hard jobs much easier to do. The way the valves work together is very clever. It allows for many complex ways to move. This makes the whole machine much more useful.
