People also speak it in the United States and Canada. It is an official language of the European Union. This language helps people stay connected to their culture.

Learning how the language works is quite interesting. Hungarian belongs to the Ugric branch of its family. This branch includes the Mansi and Khanty languages.

These other languages are spoken in western Siberia. Some scholars used to argue about where Hungarian fits. They wondered if it belonged to the Turkic family instead. This debate was called the "Ugric-Turkic war." In the end, experts decided the Uralic connection was stronger. This shows how much people study the roots of words.

The history of the language goes back a long time. Many people believe the language started in eastern Siberia.

Ancestors might have moved toward the Carpathian Basin 4,500 years ago. Long ago, people wrote using an Old Hungarian script. They often wrote on wood, but wood does not last long. Because of this, very few old writings survived. The first big book printed in Hungarian appeared in 1533.

This helped the language grow in new ways.

Many different groups have shared words with Hungarian over time. For example, about 20% of its words come from Slavic languages.

These include words for days like Wednesday and Thursday. The language also took words from Turkish and German. In the 1800s, writers like Ferenc Kazinczy helped the language grow. They created more than ten thousand new words. This process is called language revitalization. It made the language strong for the modern world.

Today, Hungarian is a living part of many different places. It is an official language in Hungary and parts of Romania and Serbia.
