A hukou is a record for a family. It lists names, parents, and birth dates.

This system has very old roots. People in ancient China used similar lists for taxes. In 1958, the modern rules were made. The government used the system to manage growth. They wanted to stop cities from getting too crowded. By controlling movement, they helped prevent large slums.

This helped China's economy grow fast.

However, the system also caused problems. For many years, people were split into two groups. These were rural and urban groups. People in cities often got more help. They could get better health care and schooling. Rural workers often had much less help. This created a big gap between people. Since 1978, the government has worked to change things. In 2014, they made new rules to help make it fairer. They even removed the split between rural and urban status.
