Hugh Glass was a famous frontiersman from the early 1800s. He lived a life full of adventure in the American West. Many people know him as a hunter and a fur trader. He also worked as an explorer in many wild places. He traveled through parts of present-day Montana, the Dakotas, and Nebraska.

Some stories say he was born in Pennsylvania to Scotch-Irish parents. Other stories say he was once captured by pirates near Texas. He might have even lived with the Pawnee tribe for a few years. His early life is very hard to prove with real records.

In 1823, Glass joined a group led by William Henry Ashley. This group was part of a big fur-trading venture. They traveled up the Missouri River to find furs. While scouting for food, Glass had a very hard job. He accidentally disturbed a mother grizzly bear with two cubs. The bear attacked him and caused many serious injuries.

Some men in his group tried to help him at first. However, they soon thought he would not survive his wounds. Two men named Fitzgerald and Bridges took his tools and left him.

Glass did not give up even though he was alone. He had a broken leg and very deep cuts. He used a bear skin to wrap himself for warmth. He spent six weeks crawling and stumbling through the wild. To stay alive, he ate wild berries and roots. He even used a small raft to float down a river.

He used a landmark called Thunder Butte to find his way. Finally, he reached Fort Kiowa in South Dakota. This amazing journey is a huge part of his legend.

After he recovered, Glass went looking for the men who left him. He found a man named Bridges and chose to forgive him. He also found John Fitzgerald later on. Glass did not hurt Fitzgerald because he saw he was in the army. Instead, he simply warned him to stay out of trouble. Glass later went back to work as a hunter for the U.S. Army. He lived as a trader until he died in 1833. He was killed during an attack by the Arikara people.

Many people today still tell the story of Hugh Glass. His life has been used in many books and movies. One famous film is called The Revenant, which came out in 2015.
