He is famous for making one of the first powered vacuum cleaners. Before his invention, cleaning tools just blew dust around. Booth saw a machine that blew air to clean. He thought it would be better to suck the dirt up. He tested this by sucking on a cloth over a chair. The dirt stayed on the cloth. This showed him his idea could work.

His first machine was very big. It was pulled by a horse. It used an engine to run a pump. This pump pulled air through a cloth filter. The filter caught the dust. The machine did not have brushes. It used long tubes to suck up dirt. People called it "Puffing Billy." It was too large for homes. Instead, people used it for big buildings. It cleaned the carpets at Westminster Abbey. It also cleaned in shops and theaters. Booth later made a company to sell cleaning services. His company made even larger models for big factories.
