geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Huaibei is a prefecture-level city located in northern Anhui Province, China. It sits at a unique geographical junction where the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu, and Henan meet. The city borders several other areas, including Suzhou to the east and Bengbu to the south. To the west, it is bordered by Bozhou. A small part of the Duji District acts as an exclave. This piece of land reaches north to border Xuzhou in Jiangsu Province.

The city is home to a large population of people. According to the 2020 census, there were 1,970,165 inhabitants living in the metro area. This was a decrease from the 2,114,276 people recorded in the 2010 census. Administratively, Huaibei manages four different county-level divisions. These include the Lieshan, Xiangshan, and Duji districts, along with Suixi County. These divisions are further broken down into 43 township-level units. These units consist of 20 towns, 8 townships, and 15 subdistricts.

The climate in Huaibei is classified as a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. This is known scientifically as a Cwa climate. This weather pattern creates distinct seasonal changes for the region. During the summer months, the weather is typically hot and humid. In contrast, the winters are characterized by being cool to cold and dry. This cycle of weather affects both the local people and the various industries in the area.

Natural resources play a massive role in the local economy. The ground beneath Huaibei holds vast quantities of mineral reserves. These include marble, iron, copper, gold, silver, nickel, cobalt, fire clay, and limestone. Most significantly, the city possesses 2.726 million tons of coal.

The scale of coal production is immense. Huaibei produces 2,000 million tons of raw coal annually. This high volume makes it the top coal producer in eastern China.

This wealth of minerals supports a massive industrial sector. There are over 2,000 industrial enterprises operating within the city. Among these, 22 are large or medium-sized firms run by the state. The power industry is a major part of this sector. The Huaibei Power Station has a total installed capacity of 950 MW. It produces an annual electricity output of 620 GW.

Additionally, the Huaibei No. 2 Power Station is currently under construction. This new facility will have an installed capacity of 1.2 GW.

Other specialized industries also thrive in the region. The textile industry is ranked second in Anhui Province. It uses 200,000 spindles and 15,000 looms to produce goods. The city also has a printing and dyeing capacity of 110 million meters. Another historic industry is winemaking, which is over 1,000 years old. The city produces 20,000 tons of Kouzi wine every year.

Furthermore, the construction industry produces 2 million tons of cement annually. The chemical industry focuses on making products like fertilizers, coke, sulphuric acid, and rubber.

Agriculture remains a vital pillar of the Huaibei economy. The city serves as a main agricultural base for exporting grain, cotton, and livestock. Farmers grow various crops including wheat, maize, cotton, broad beans, rice, and potatoes.

The livestock sector includes cattle, horses, pigs, goats, rabbits, and domestic birds. Some land is also dedicated to fisheries. These waters contain large amounts of fish, shrimp, and crabs. Huaibei is even part of the National Agricultural Comprehensive Development Zones in Huanghai and Huaihai.

Finally, Huaibei is a major hub for international trade and transport. It is one of the ten largest coal exporting cities in China. It is also the largest exporter of textile products in Anhui. One large enterprise exports over 100 kinds of goods to more than 80 countries. These destinations include the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, Russia, and Hong Kong.

Transportation is supported by several railways and six state or provincial highways. The Qinglongshan Port connects the city to Hongze Lake and the Yangtze River. This connectivity helps move goods across the globe efficiently.
