The name Bengbu translates to "Clam Wharf" in Chinese. This name reflects the city's historical reputation as a site for freshwater pearl fisheries. Today, the city serves as a major administrative center. It manages seven county-level divisions. These include four urban districts: Longzihu, Bengshan, Yuhui, and Huaishang. It also manages three counties: Huaiyuan, Wuhe, and Guzhen. These divisions are further broken down into 74 township-level units. These units consist of 36 towns, 19 townships, and 19 subdistricts.

The climate in Bengbu is described as a humid subtropical climate. This is known scientifically as the Cwa classification under the Köppen climate system. The city sits in a climatic transition zone. It is located on the Qin Ling−Huai River boundary. This boundary separates the different weather patterns of northern and southern China. The city experiences four distinct seasons. Winters are often cool or cold. Summers are characterized by being hot and humid. Most of the annual precipitation arrives between June and August. The city also enjoys a significant amount of sunlight. It receives approximately 2,168 hours of bright sunshine every year.

Bengbu has a deep history involving several ancient groups. Long ago, the Dongyi peoples inhabited this region. They were known as the Huaiyi due to their connection to the Huai River. During the late Western Zhou Period, these groups began to undergo sinicization. This is a process where they became more like the Chinese culture. The powerful Dongyi state of Xu was eventually destroyed during the late Spring and Autumn period. This happened through wars with neighboring powers like the Chu and Wu states. Another group, the Zhongli State, was part of the Huaiyi Confederation. Between 2005 and 2008, archaeologists discovered royal tombs from the Zhongli State near Fengyang.

The economy of Bengbu is heavily centered on food production. Food-related industries account for 44% of the city's total industrial production. The city is also involved in several other sectors. These include engineering, textiles, glass making, chemicals, and electronics. Light textiles play a vital role in the industrial structure. Agriculture is also a major part of life in the region. Bengbu produces large amounts of oil, vegetables, meat, and aquatic products. It is a major producer of peanuts. Specific items from the area are famous across China. For example, pomegranates from Huaiyuan County have a high reputation. Crabs from Wuhe County are also very well known.

Transportation is a key feature of the city's importance. Bengbu has always been a hub for both water and land communications. It serves as a major distribution center for the Huai basin. The city is located on the Jinghu Railway. This allows for hourly direct trains to major cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Travelers can also use the Bengbu South Railway Station for the high-speed Beijing-Shanghai Railway.

While the original airport is now used for military purposes, a new commercial airport is being built. Additionally, construction on the Bengbu Metro began in 2019 to improve local travel.

Education and culture are also present in the city. There are several institutions of higher learning in the university district. This district is located on the east side of the urban area, near Dragon Lake. Notable colleges include the Anhui University of Finance and Economics and Bengbu Medical College. The city also hosts the Bengbu Stadium. This facility has a capacity of 15,000 people and is used mostly for football matches. The city's cuisine is similar to the styles found in nearby Henan, Shandong, and Jiangsu provinces. In 2020, the census recorded a total population of 3,296,408 residents in the city.
