He wrote it between 1954 and 1955. The poem was for his friend, Carl Solomon. Ginsberg met Carl in a mental hospital. He felt great sympathy for him.

Ginsberg used a special way to write. He wrote long lines based on his breath. In Part I, he used the word "who" to keep a beat. This helped the poem sound like music. He wrote about many different people. He called them "the best minds" of his time. He wrote about artists and jazz musicians.

Part II of the poem is different. It is about a monster named Moloch. Ginsberg got this idea from a vision. He saw a hotel in the fog. It looked like a scary face. He used this to talk about modern life.

Ginsberg read the poem at the Six Gallery. This was in San Francisco in 1955. Many people felt wonder when they heard it. Later, some people were upset by the book. They were even arrested for selling it. But a judge ruled the poem was not bad. Now, "Howl" is a great work of art.
