The Beat Generation was a group of writers. They started in New York City around 1944. Many of them met at Columbia University. They wanted to find a new way to live and write. They did not want to follow old rules.

These writers explored many things. They looked at different religions. They also liked jazz music. The word "beat" had two meanings to them. It could mean feeling tired or worn out. It could also mean feeling happy or holy.

Famous books came from this group. Jack Kerouac wrote *On the Road*. Allen Ginsberg wrote a poem called *Howl*. William S. Burroughs wrote *Naked Lunch*. These books even went to court. Judges had to decide if they were okay to print. The trials helped make it easier to publish new ideas in America.

Some writers moved to San Francisco. They read their poems in a place called the Six Gallery.

This helped their ideas spread to many people. Their style helped lead to the hippie culture of the 1960s. They showed that being different can be a way to make art.
