Howard Jacobson is a famous British writer who tells stories with humor. He writes novels, which are long stories, and he also writes for newspapers. Many of his books focus on the lives of Jewish people in Britain. He uses comedy to explore many different feelings. His writing can be very funny, but it can also be quite sad. He says that comedy is a very important part of his work.

Jacobson has a very busy way of working. He writes books that people read in libraries and shops. He also writes a weekly column for a newspaper called The Independent. Sometimes, he writes for television shows instead of books. He has made programs about history and about why books are important. He even presented a series on Channel 4 about the history of the Bible.

His life has taken him to many different places. He was born in Manchester in 1942 to a family with Russian-Jewish roots. His family came from places like Lithuania and what is now Ukraine. He went to school in Greater Manchester and then studied at Cambridge. He even spent time living and teaching in Australia. While in Australia, he worked at the University of Sydney.

Jacobson has won some of the biggest prizes for writing. In 2010, he won the Man Booker Prize for his book, The Finkler Question. This book explores love, loss, and friendship. He also won the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize two different times. He won it first in 1999 for The Mighty Walzer, a story about table tennis. He won it again in 2013 for his book Zoo Time.

Many people compare his style to other famous writers. He once called himself a "Jewish Jane Austen." This means he shares some qualities with the famous author Jane Austen. He also thinks his writing is shaped by 5,000 years of Jewish history. This history helps create his special sense of humor. His stories often look at how people live together in the modern world.
