A hostel is a type of low-cost, short-term lodging designed for social interaction. Most guests rent a single bed, which is usually a bunk bed, within a larger room called a dormitory. These dormitories typically accommodate between 4 and 20 people at a time. Beyond sleeping quarters, hostels offer shared communal spaces such as lounges and kitchens. This model provides an affordable way for travelers to find housing while building a sense of community.

Hostels function through a variety of room types and shared amenities. While many guests sleep in shared dormitories, some hostels offer private rooms for those seeking more seclusion. These rooms may be mixed-gender or single-sex. Bathrooms can also be private or shared among many guests. To manage daily needs, hostels often provide laundry services, luggage storage, and secure lockers. Some establishments even offer long-term stays at a discount or for free in exchange for work. Guests might assist with housekeeping or work as a receptionist to earn their stay.

Different hostels cater to specific types of travelers through unique social programs. Some locations focus on organized activities like movie nights, communal dinners, or local tours. Others might host cooking classes or pub crawls to encourage guest interaction. Certain hostels are known specifically for a party atmosphere, while others provide a quiet environment for relaxation. You might even find an ecohostel that focuses on being environmentally friendly. Some locations cater to digital nomads or perpetual travelers by offering upmarket private rooms.

Living in a hostel requires adjusting to shared environments and less privacy. Because sleeping areas and bathrooms are often shared, it may be less comfortable for those who value solitude. Noise is another common factor, caused by snoring, talking, or social activities in the lounge. Guests may also deal with light from others staying up late or people leaving early in the morning. To manage these issues, many travelers use earplugs or eye masks. In the communal kitchen, guests often use a label system to identify their food. Some hostels even provide a "free shelf" where guests can leave unwanted food for others.

The concept of the hostel began with Richard Schirrmann, a teacher in Germany. In August 1909, Schirrmann led a school camping trip that was disrupted by a thunderstorm. This event inspired his idea for inexpensive accommodation for youth travelers. He eventually opened a makeshift hostel for hikers at his school. On June 1, 1912, Schirrmann opened the first official hostel in Altena Castle.

After serving in World War I, he observed the Christmas truce on the Western Front. This experience led him to wonder if young people from different countries could meet in suitable places to get to know one another. Consequently, he founded the German Youth Hostel Association in 1919.

The hostel industry has seen significant growth and shifts throughout history. By 1932, Germany had more than 2,000 hostels, recording over 4.5 million overnight stays annually. That same year, the International Youth Hostel Federation, now known as Hostelling International, was founded. Today, this organization includes over 90 associations representing more than 4,500 hostels in over 80 countries. While the industry declined during the 1970s energy crisis, it grew during the 2008 financial crisis because of its low cost. In 2019, Europe had an estimated 5,829 hostels, while Asia had 4,738 hostels.

The global economic scale of hostelling is substantial and continues to expand. The global hostel market was estimated at US$7.21 billion in 2023. It is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.5% until 2030. While hostels are highly popular with backpackers and youth, most do not impose strict age limits. The typical guest is between 16 and 34 years old, though this varies by country.
