Some large facilities are called medical centers. These combine many different healthcare jobs in one place.

There are different ways to use a hospital. Some people are outpatients. They visit for a checkup or therapy and then go home. Other people are inpatients. They are admitted to stay in a bed for days or weeks.

Hospitals also have many different departments. Some focus on surgery or urgent care. Others have units for specific needs, like cardiology. Support units help the hospital run smoothly. These include the pharmacy, radiology, and pathology. Large hospitals may even have their own administrative headquarters.

Specialized hospitals focus on just one or two areas. This can help lower the cost of care.
