sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Horse racing is an equestrian performance activity. It involves two or more horses competing over a set distance. Usually, jockeys ride the horses to guide them. In other versions, drivers lead the horses without any riders on their backs. This sport is one of the most ancient in the world. Its basic goal has not changed since classical antiquity. The goal is to identify which horse is the fastest over a specific course.

There are many different ways to conduct a race. In flat racing, horses gallop between two points. These tracks are often oval and level. However, some tracks have severe gradients or changes in camber. Surfaces include turf, dirt, or synthetic materials like Polytrack. Jump racing, also known as steeplechasing, requires horses to leap over obstacles.

Harness racing involves horses pulling a driver in a small cart called a sulky. In endurance racing, horses travel extreme distances. These races can range from ten miles to over one hundred miles.

Different breeds are specialized for these various types of racing. Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, and Arabians are common in flat racing. Jump racing often uses Thoroughbreds or AQPS horses. In harness racing, Standardbreds are the most common breed. These horses are divided into trotters and pacers. Pacers move their legs on each side of the body in tandem. Trotters move their diagonal legs together.

The sport requires skilled jockeys, trainers, and grooms. It also needs experts in breeding and stable management. This provides career opportunities for many working-class people.
