Equestrianism is the diverse practice of interacting with horses and other equids, such as mules.

This field includes three primary disciplines: riding, driving, and vaulting. People engage in these activities for many reasons. They use horses for practical work, such as police duties or ranching. Others use them for transportation, recreation, or artistic expression. Equestrianism also includes competitive sports and therapeutic riding to improve human health.

In competitive sports, many different disciplines exist. Dressage, a French word meaning "training," focuses on a horse's obedience. The goal is to show the horse performing natural movements on request. Show jumping is a timed event where riders navigate obstacles. They aim to complete the course with the fewest refusals or knocked-down parts. Eventing, or combined training, is a more intense test. It combines dressage and show jumping with a cross-country phase. In cross-country, horses jump fixed obstacles like logs, stone walls, and water.

Horse racing is another major part of equestrian culture. It can take place under saddle or in harness. Thoroughbreds are the most famous breed for flat racing. In the United Kingdom, this is governed by the Jockey Club. Harness racing involves horses pulling a small bike called a sulky. The Standardbred breed often dominates these trot or pace varieties.

There is also endurance riding, which covers long, measured distances. These races often move across mountainous or natural terrain. Veterinarians must check the horses' vital signs during scheduled stops. A horse must be confirmed fit to continue to win.

History shows that horses have shaped human civilization for millennia. Experts estimate that people first rode horses around 3500 BC. By 3000 BC, evidence near the Dnieper and Don Rivers suggests the use of bits. A buried stallion showed tooth wear consistent with bit use. The most direct evidence of working horses comes from chariot burials around 2500 BC.

In ancient times, horses were used in chariot warfare and as cavalry. Horses also supported trade, agriculture, and transportation. While horses once lived in North America, they died out there after the Ice Age. European explorers brought them back starting in 1493.

Modern equestrianism includes many specialized types of competition. At horse shows, events are often grouped into categories. Equitation focuses on the rider's form and style. Pleasure classes judge horses on their manners and movement. Halter classes involve a handler leading the horse on the ground. These animals are judged on their suitability for breeding.

There are also harness classes where the horse is driven. These events allow people to showcase different skills and breeds.

Advanced classical training is known as haute école, or "high school." This involves highly refined skills often seen in demonstration performances. Famous academies include the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Other prestigious schools include the Cadre Noir in France. The Portuguese School of Equestrian Art and the Royal Andalusian School are also leaders.

Because horses are living animals, welfare is a critical concern. Recent studies have raised questions about the impact of riding on horse health. One British study found that 73% of examined horses showed some lameness. About half of those horses showed signs of pain during riding. Researchers used the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE) to measure this. Pain indicators often increase during long periods of work.

Proper saddle fitting is also essential to prevent back pain. A saddle that is too narrow or too wide can cause harm. Even skilled riders sometimes struggle to recognize these issues. Educating riders to see behavioral signs of pain is vital for better care.
