A goalkeeper is a player tasked with protecting the goal and preventing the opposing team from scoring. Solo is widely considered one of the greatest female goalkeepers in history. She established numerous records for the United States women's national soccer team. These include 202 career appearances and 190 starts. She also holds the U.S. record for 102 career shutouts. A shutout occurs when a goalkeeper prevents the opponent from scoring any goals during a match. Her dominance is further evidenced by her 153 career wins and a 55-game undefeated streak.

Solo's path to professional greatness began with early athletic development. Born on July 30, 1981, in Richland, Washington, she learned soccer from her father. At Richland High School, she was a prolific forward who scored 109 goals. This success led her to the University of Washington, where she studied speech communications.

Solo was the first goalkeeper to be named the Pac-10 Player of the Year.

Her professional career spanned several leagues and continents. In 2003, she was selected fourth overall in the WUSA Draft by the Philadelphia Charge. When the WUSA folded, Solo moved to Europe to maintain her professional standing. She played for Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC in the Swedish Premier Division during 2004.
