She primarily played as a winger, a position located along the sides of the field. Rapinoe is celebrated for her crafty style of play and her significant activism. She achieved high honors, including the Ballon d'Or Féminin and being named The Best FIFA Women's Player in 2019. Beyond her individual skill, she was a leader on the United States national team. She co-captained the squad alongside Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd from 2018 to 2020. Her career spanned many clubs and international competitions, making her a global figure in sports.

Rapinoe's technical skill often decided the outcome of major matches. In the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup quarterfinal against Brazil, she delivered a precise cross. This pass went to Abby Wambach in the 122nd minute to create an equalizer. This moment eventually led to an American victory after a penalty shootout. This specific play earned ESPN's 2011 ESPY Award for Best Play of the Year. During the 2012 London Olympics, her impact was even more measurable. She scored three goals and provided four assists to help the United States win gold.

Her journey through different levels of soccer shows her resilience. At the University of Portland, she played as an attacking midfielder. In 2005, she helped the Pilots win the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. During that season, she scored 15 goals and added 13 assists for 43 total points. However, her college career included difficult physical challenges. She suffered two season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. An ACL is a major ligament in the knee that provides stability. Despite these injuries, she returned to play all 22 games in her final college season.
