Long ago, a new kind of person lived. They walked on two legs. They used big stone tools. They even used fire. They lived in many far places.
A long time ago, a new kind of person lived. They were the first to walk like we do. They also used fire to stay warm.
These people lived in many lands. They moved from Africa to Asia and Europe. They made big, heavy tools from stone. They used these tools to work with wood. They also used them to cut meat.
Their bones were very thick. They had large teeth and big jaws. Some had very large brains. They lived on wide, grassy plains.
They were the first to hunt for food. They lived for a very long time. They stayed in many places for millions of years. It is amazing how they lived!
A long time ago, a new kind of human appeared. We call them Homo erectus. They were the first to walk upright like we do. They were also the first to leave Africa. They traveled to live in Asia and Europe.
These people were very good at making things. They made the Acheulean tool industry. This means they made large, heavy tools from stone.
Their bodies looked different from ours. They had very thick bones. Their skulls had large teeth and a strong brow ridge. This is the bone above the eyes. Some groups had even larger brains than others. They lived for nearly two million years. The last group lived in Southeast Asia. They lived there until the grassy plains turned into thick jungle.
Homo erectus was a very important species of early human. They lived during the Pleistocene period for nearly two million years. This species was the first to have a body plan like ours. They also had a humanlike way of walking. They were the first humans to leave Africa to live in Asia and Europe.
These early humans had a very interesting way of living. They were likely the first hunter-gatherers. This means they hunted animals and gathered food from nature.
Scientists have spent a long time studying these ancient people. In 1893, a man named Eugène Dubois first described them.
There are many specific facts about how they looked and lived. Their skulls usually had a thick ridge of bone above the eyes. They also had protruding jaws and large teeth. Their bones were much thicker than our bones are today.
Understanding Homo erectus helps us see how humans changed over time. They were the first to use fire in their daily lives.
Homo erectus was a highly successful species of archaic human. They lived during the Pleistocene epoch for nearly two million years. This species was the first to evolve a humanlike body plan and gait. They were also the first humans to leave Africa to colonize Asia and Europe.
Scientists have used different names to describe various groups of Homo erectus. Some researchers recognize several subspecies to show where and when they lived. These include H. e. erectus from Indonesia and H. e. pekinensis from China. Other groups include H. e. soloensis, H. e. ergaster, H. e. georgicus, and H. e. tautavelensis.
The discovery of Homo erectus changed how we understand human history. In 1893, Eugène Dubois described the species using fossils from Java, Indonesia.

Physically, Homo erectus looked quite different from modern humans. Their skulls typically featured a pronounced brow ridge, known as a supraorbital torus. They also had protruding jaws and large teeth. Their bones were much thicker and more robust than ours. Reconstructed adult heights ranged from about 3 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches. Their brain volumes also varied by region. East Asian populations often had larger brain volumes than Western populations. Some groups, like H. e. georgicus, had brain volumes that were quite low.
Homo erectus was also a very skilled survivor. They invented the Acheulean tool industry, which focused on large, heavy-duty stone tools.
Their ability to move across the world was a major achievement. This dispersal was likely driven by bipedalism, better technology, and a carnivorous diet.
Even though they were widespread, the species eventually declined. The last known occurrence of Homo erectus was in Southeast Asia. This was between 108,000 and 117,000 years ago.
