He published this sixth book in 1938 to record his personal experiences in Spain. Orwell went to the Spanish Civil War to fight against fascism. He wanted to defend what he called "common decency."

The book is important because it shows how the war changed his political views. He later said his work was always written against totalitarianism. This means he wrote against governments that have total control over people. His writing helps us understand a very difficult time in history.

Orwell's journey began when he decided to join the fight in the autumn of 1936. He first tried to get help from the Communist Party in London. When they refused, he contacted the Independent Labour Party instead.

They sent him to Spain as a reporter for their weekly paper. He arrived in Barcelona by train at the end of December 1936. In Barcelona, he joined the militia of the POUM. The POUM was a small political group that was against Stalinism. He mostly joined them by chance because of his travel papers.

Life in Barcelona during the revolution felt very different to Orwell. He saw a city where the working class was in charge.

Every wall had symbols like the hammer and sickle painted on it. Shops and cafes were run by the workers themselves. People even stopped using formal titles like "Señor" to show equality. Orwell also saw militia members training in old-fashioned ways. He noted that many recruits were just young boys. These boys often did not fully understand the meaning of war.

After his time in the city, Orwell moved to the front lines. He traveled to the Aragon region near the city of Zaragoza.

Life in the trenches was often very boring and uncomfortable. The soldiers had to deal with many shortages of basic things. They lacked enough food, candles, tobacco, and even firewood. It was mid-winter, and the cold was described as unspeakable. Orwell even had to use a very old, rusty German rifle. He lived in high hills that were thousands of feet above sea level.

People have read and debated this book for many years. When it first came out, some reviewers liked his vivid descriptions. However, others disagreed with his views on the government.

The book became even more popular in the 1950s. This happened after his famous novels, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, became hits. Different groups of thinkers have looked at the book in different ways. Some see it as a story about fighting communism. Others see it as a story about revolutionary socialism. Even today, historians study it to learn about the Spanish conflict.
