In 1938, he published a book called Homage to Catalonia. This book is a memoir, which is a true story about a person's life. Orwell wrote it to share what he saw during the Spanish Civil War. He went to Spain to fight against fascism. He said he fought for "common decency."

Orwell spent time in the city of Barcelona. There, the working class had a lot of power. Shops and cafes were run by the workers. People even stopped using formal titles to show they were equal. Later, Orwell moved to the front lines in Aragon. Life there was very hard. He stayed in cold trenches and dealt with shortages of food and wood.

He even described using an old, rusty rifle. His book tells of his time in the POUM, a small political group. It also covers his time in the war and his escape to France. Many people still read his words to learn about that time in history.
