It serves as a massive cultural celebration for Hindus and non-Hindus alike. People participate by throwing colored water and powders at one another. This act fosters a sense of playfulness and togetherness. Beyond the fun, Holi marks the arrival of spring in India and Nepal. It signals the end of winter and the blossoming of love. For many, it is a time to reset ruptured relationships. It provides an occasion to end conflicts and forgive past mistakes.

The festival follows a specific sequence occurring over a night and a day. It begins on the evening of the Purnima, which is the full moon day. This day falls in the Hindu lunar month of Phalguna. In the Gregorian calendar, this usually happens around mid-March. The night before the main festivities begins with Holika Dahan. This is a ceremony involving large bonfires, often called "Little Holi."

People gather around these fires to sing and dance. The following day is the main celebration, known as Rangwali Holi or Dhuleti. On this day, the playful use of colors reaches its peak.

Holi is known by many different names depending on the region. In Bengal, it is called Dol Jatra or Bôshonto Utshôb. People in Assam call it Phakua or Dôl Jātrā. In Nepal, the hilly regions refer to it as Phāgu Pūrṇimā. The festival has also spread to the Caribbean, where it is called Phagwah. In Fiji, the name Phagua is used. These regional names reflect the deep roots of the festival across the Indian subcontinent and its diaspora.

The history of Holi reaches back to ancient times. It emerged in the Indian subcontinent before the Gupta period. The festival is mentioned in several sacred scriptures. These include the Narada Purana and the Bhavishya Purana. Even the 7th-century work Ratnavali by King Harsha describes the festival.

By the 17th century, European traders and British colonial staff became fascinated by the event. Early English dictionaries recorded various phonetic spellings, such as "Houly" in 1687 and "Hooly" in 1698.

Religious legends provide the spiritual meaning behind the colors and fires. One legend celebrates the divine love between Radha and Krishna. In the Braj region, festivities continue until Rang Panchmi to honor them. Another legend explains the triumph of good over evil. The king Hiranyakashipu had received special powers that made him feel invincible. He demanded worship, but his son Prahlada remained devoted to the god Vishnu.

To punish Prahlada, his aunt Holika sat in a fire with him. She had a cloak to protect her, but the cloak flew away. Holika burned, while Prahlada survived. Vishnu then appeared as Narasimha, a half-human and half-lion avatar, to defeat the king.

In some South Indian traditions, the festival is linked to the god of love, Kamadeva. Legend says Shiva burned Kama to ashes with his third eye. After Rati, Kama's wife, performed intense meditation, Shiva restored him. This return of love is celebrated on the 40th day after Vasant Panchami.

This adds a layer of complex mythology to the seasonal celebration. The festival connects the cycles of nature to the cycles of human emotion.

Holi also intersects with other religious and social systems. The Sikh community has a historical connection to the festival. The last human guru, Guru Gobind Singh, created Hola Mohalla. This is a three-day extension involving martial arts and mock battles.

In 1837, Maharaja Ranjit Singh celebrated Holi with 300 mounds of colors in Lahore. This shows how the festival can be adapted into different cultural practices. Today, Holi remains a significant way to celebrate agriculture and the spring harvest.
