Later, in 1557, a leader named Altan Khan began building the Da Zhao Temple. This temple helped a town grow around it. That town was called the "Blue Town" in Mongolian.

The name Hohhot actually means "Blue City" in the Mongolian language. In Mongol culture, the color blue is very special. It represents the sky, purity, and eternity. Sometimes, people call it the "Green City" instead. This happens because of how names are translated from Chinese into English. The Chinese name can be read in ways that mean green.
