Hirshabelle is a Federal Member State located in south-central Somalia. It serves as a key administrative division within the Federal Republic of Somalia. The state is unique because its name is a combination of its two constituent regions. These two regions are Hiraan and Middle Shabelle.

As a Federal Member State, it operates under the rules set by the provisional Constitution of Somalia. This legal framework allows different regions to join together to form a single state.

The geography of Hirshabelle places it in a strategic position. To the east, the state meets the Indian Ocean. Ethiopia forms the border to the west. To the north, it is bordered by the Galmudug state. The South West State and the Banadir region lie to the south.

The Shabelle river is a vital feature of this landscape. In fact, the river is so important that it is symbolized on the state flag. The river flows across the state, providing a central lifeline for the area.

Several important cities define the urban landscape of the state. Jowhar serves as the capital city of Hirshabelle. Beledweyne is the second largest city in the region. For maritime activities, the state relies on Adale, which is the main port town.

These locations help manage the movement of people and goods across the south-central part of the country. The presence of the river and the coast shapes how these cities function.

History shows that Hirshabelle was the final Federal Member State established in Somalia. Its creation followed a consensus agreement reached by various clan leaders. This process was guided by Article 49 of the provisional constitution. This specific article allows two or more regions to merge voluntarily. After the regions agreed to join, clan elders selected 97 members of parliament.

This structured process helped transition the regions into a unified state.

The political history of the state has seen several leadership changes. In October 2016, local presidential elections were held. Ali Abdullahi Osoble won that initial election. In March 2017, the Hirshabelle Parliament approved a Cabinet consisting of 52 Ministers. However, later in 2017, the Parliament removed Osoble from the presidency. This happened through a vote of no confidence.

Following this, Mohamed Abdi Ware was elected as the interim President in September 2017.

Since 2020, Ali Abdullahi Hussein has served as the President of Hirshabelle. His election involved a significant majority within the Parliament. Out of the 99 members of Parliament, 86 cast their votes in favor of him. Only 13 votes went to his opponent, Abdirahman Jimale Osman.

The President acts as the executive head of the state. This means the President is both the head of state and the head of government. The President also holds the power to appoint and dismiss members of the Cabinet.

Demographics in Hirshabelle reflect a diverse and moving population. According to a 2014 survey, the state has 1.03 million inhabitants. The population is divided into different living styles. About 19% of people live in urban areas. Another 37% live in rural areas, while 34% are part of nomadic groups.

The sex distribution shows that 55% of the population is female and 45% is male. Many different clans live here, including the Gaalje'el, Hawadle, Abgaal, Badi Ade, Udejeen, and Jareerweyn.

Social challenges also impact the people living in the region. Due to conflict with Al-Shabaab, many people have been forced to move. These people are known as internally displaced people, or IDPs. Currently, IDPs account for 10% of the total population in Hirshabelle.
