Hiri Motu

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hiri Motu is a way to talk. It is from Papua New Guinea.

Long ago, people used it to trade goods. They traded things like clay pots.

This way of talking is simpler than Motu. Motu is the old language of the people.

Some people called it Police Motu. This is because police used it to talk.

It has two main ways of speaking. One way is called the Papuan dialect. The other is called the Austronesian dialect.

There are special ways to say "we." One way includes the person you talk to. The other way does not include them.

Today, fewer people use Hiri Motu every day. Many people now use English to talk. It is still a very special part of history.
