He was born on August 18, 1935, in a place called Okanghudi. At that time, his home was part of South West Africa. He went to school at the Anglican Holy Cross Mission school. After school, he worked at the Tsumeb mine in 1956. Later, he joined a group called SWAPO to fight for his country. This group wanted Namibia to be a free and independent nation. He left his job at the mine to help the group full-time.

During his early years, Pohamba had to travel to many different lands. In 1961, he went to Tanganyika to meet Sam Nujoma. Nujoma later became the very first president of Namibia. Pohamba faced many hard times while traveling for his cause. He was arrested in Rhodesia and spent six months in a jail in Johannesburg. He also lived in places like Zambia and Algeria to help SWAPO. From 1981 to 1982, he even went to the Soviet Union to study politics. These many travels helped him learn how to lead people.

When Namibia finally became independent in 1990, Pohamba took on many big jobs. He first served as the Minister of Home Affairs for five years. After that, he was the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources from 1995 to 1997. He also worked as a Minister without portfolio for a short time. In 2001, he became the Minister of Lands, Resettlement and Rehabilitation. In this role, he helped move land to people who did not have any. He worked hard to make things more fair for many citizens.

In 2004, Pohamba ran for president of the whole country.
