Alpert grew up in a house full of music in Los Angeles. His parents moved to the United States from Ukraine and Romania. His father played the mandolin, and his mother taught the violin. His brother was a drummer, and his sister played the piano. Alpert started playing the trumpet when he was only eight years old. He even played in the USC Trojan Marching Band during college.

In the 1960s, Alpert led a popular band called the Tijuana Brass. He got a great idea for a song while visiting Mexico. He heard the exciting sounds of a bullfight in Tijuana. He heard the trumpet calls and the cheering crowds. He used these ideas to create his hit song, "The Lonely Bull." At first, he recorded the music by himself using a technique called overdubbing. This meant he played the trumpet parts over and over on the same recording. Later, he worked with talented studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew.

Alpert was also a very smart businessman. He and his partner Jerry Moss started A&M Records. This company became a very large and successful record label. Alpert has sold about 72 million records all over the world. He has released 28 albums that reached the U.S. Billboard 200 charts. Five of those albums even reached the number one spot. He is the only musician to hit number one as both a singer and an instrumentalist. He sang the hit song "This Guy's in Love with You" in 1968.
