HEPA is a name for very high-quality air filters.

These filters must meet strict rules. A HEPA filter must catch at least 99.97% of tiny particles. This rule is often used in the United States. The particles are 0.3 micrometers wide. A micrometer is a tiny unit of measure.

HEPA filters use a mat of tangled fibers. These fibers are often made of fiberglass. They catch things in three main ways.

First is diffusion. Very small particles bounce around. They hit air molecules and crash into fibers.

Second is interception. Mid-size particles follow the air. They get close to a fiber and stick.

Third is impaction. Large particles cannot turn with the air. They crash directly into the fibers.

These filters catch dust, pollen, and bacteria. They can even catch some viruses.
