HEPA is a special name for very high-quality air filters.

These filters are built to meet very strict efficiency standards. A filter must be called HEPA if it can catch a huge amount of tiny particles. In the United States, the standard says it must remove at least 99.97% of particles. These particles are 0.3 micrometers wide. A micrometer is a tiny unit of measure used for very small things. This specific size is used because it is the hardest size to catch.

How does a filter catch things that are so small? A HEPA filter is made of a mat of tangled fibers. These fibers are often made of fiberglass or polypropylene. The fibers create a winding path for the air to travel through. There are three main ways these fibers trap particles. First is diffusion, where the smallest particles bounce around and hit fibers. Second is interception, where mid-size particles follow the air and stick to a fiber. Third is impaction, where large particles crash directly into the fibers.

People have used these high-quality filters for a long time. The term HEPA was first used in the 1950s. Since then, it became a registered trademark for these efficient filters. Now, it is used as a general name for this type of technology. Different parts of the world use different rules for these filters. The European Standard EN 1822-1:2009 sets rules for how well they work. In Europe, a HEPA filter must remove at least 99.95% of particles.

These filters are used in many important places every day. They help keep air clean in hospitals and even in homes. They are also used in vehicles and for making food or medicine. Some factories use them to make tiny parts like hard disk drives. HEPA filters can catch many things like pollen, dust, and bacteria. They can even catch some viruses, including the COVID-19 virus.

In some cases, they are used alongside a pre-filter to catch larger hair and dust first.

You might see HEPA filters in things you use at home. Many vacuum cleaners use them to help people with allergies or asthma. These filters trap fine dust and pollen that might make people sneeze. Some companies use the term "True HEPA" to show their filters meet the real standard. However, filters labeled "HEPA-type" might not be as good. It is important to change these filters every few years in a home. This keeps the machine working well and the air staying clean.
