Sir Frederick Henry Royce was a highly influential English engineer.

He became famous for designing car and aeroplane engines. His designs were known for their exceptional reliability and longevity. These qualities helped establish a global reputation for excellence. In 1904, he joined Charles Rolls and Claude Johnson. Together, they founded the Rolls-Royce Limited company. This partnership changed the history of both the automotive and aviation industries.

Royce's early life was defined by significant financial hardship. He was born in Alwalton in 1863 to Mary and James Royce. His family had roots in farming and milling. However, his father struggled to make a success of a flour mill. Following his father's death in 1872, Royce faced very difficult circumstances. At age nine, he had very little formal education. He often ate only two thick slices of bread soaked in milk. He even once slept in a dog kennel to stay warm.

To support himself, Royce took on several difficult jobs. At age ten, he sold newspapers at Clapham Junction and Bishopsgate Station. In 1876, he worked as a telegram messenger for the Post Office. He earned a half penny for each delivery. His great-aunt Catherine helped him secure an apprenticeship in 1878. She paid £20 a year to the Great Northern Railway company for his placement. Royce worked hard to learn, attending evening classes in English and mathematics.

His career in electrical engineering grew through steady progression. He worked as a tester for the Electric Lighting and Power Generating Company. This role doubled his wages to 22 shillings a week. In 1882, at age 19, he became chief engineer for a subsidiary in Liverpool. When that company faced liquidation in 1884, Royce chose a different path. He moved to Manchester with only £20 in savings. He established F. H. Royce and Company to manufacture electrical and mechanical items.

This new business grew through careful partnership and technical skill.

He partnered with Ernest Alexander Claremont to manage sales and deliveries. They initially lived in a shared room above their workshop. They survived on simple meals like sandwiches and sausages. Their first successful product was a domestic electric bell. Eventually, they expanded into making lighting components and electric cranes. By 1894, the company was a private limited company with 100 employees.

The company's success was tied to the rise of electricity.

They manufactured dynamos, motors, and arc lamps. They even provided the arc-lighting system for the Port of Manchester. In 1897, Royce received his first patent for a bayonet-cap lamp socket. The business grew rapidly, with orders increasing from £6,000 in 1897 to £20,000 by 1890. This growth allowed the company to expand its factory and workforce significantly.

After founding Rolls-Royce Limited, the company's focus shifted. They initially produced large motor cars with 40 to 50 horsepower. One such famous model was the Silver Ghost.

Following the outbreak of the First World War, Royce began producing aero engines. These aircraft engines soon became the company's principal product. His engineering expertise helped define the standards for modern flight technology.

Royce's later years were affected by his health. In 1911, he was persuaded to move to the south of England. He spent his winters in the south of France. He died at his home in Sussex in the spring of 1933.
