Henry Irving was a famous English actor.

He was born in 1838. His family did not have much money. As a boy, he had a stammer. This meant he had trouble speaking clearly. He went to a school that helped him. He learned to speak well through elocution classes. Elocution is the study of how to speak.

Irving worked very hard to learn his craft. He spent many years acting in small towns. He played hundreds of parts in many different plays. He became a star at the Lyceum theatre in London. He was known for making his shows look grand. He used many bright colors and fine details. He often acted in plays by William Shakespeare.

People said he was a magnetic actor. This means he could hold an audience's attention easily. He could play noble heroes or evil villains. In 1895, he became the first actor to be a knight. This showed that acting was a great art.
