He was born on October 7, 1888, in rural Iowa. His family lived on a farm near a place called Orient. His father, Henry Cantwell Wallace, was also a leader in farming. The elder Wallace served as the Secretary of Agriculture from 1921 to 1924.

Growing up, Henry learned many things about plants. A famous scientist named George Washington Carver helped teach him about botany. Carver gave the young boy tutorials after school. This help was important for Henry's future work with crops.

Henry became a very successful businessman by studying corn. He was interested in how mathematics could help farmers. He studied how to make better seeds through a process called hybridizing. In 1926, he co-founded the Hi-Bred Corn Company. This company focused on making hybrid corn. At first, the business only made a small profit. Eventually, it became a huge financial success for him. He even worked on improving chickens later in his life.

Later, Henry moved into high levels of government service. He served as the Secretary of Agriculture from 1933 to 1940. During this time, he worked with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He supported the New Deal to help people in rural areas. He wanted to fix problems like poverty and extra food surpluses.

Henry Wallace's life shows how one person can impact many areas. He moved from being a farmer to a leader of a nation. He used science to change how we grow food. He also tried to change how the government helps its people. Even when he lost elections, he kept working with agriculture. He passed away in 1965 from a disease called ALS. His work with seeds and plants left a lasting mark on the world.
