He loved to study how different parts of nature work. One of his biggest jobs was finding a gas called fluorine. Many people tried to find it before him. Some even died during their attempts. In 1886, Moissan finally succeeded. He used a special way called electrolysis. This means using electricity to separate parts of a liquid. He used a very cold mixture to do this. This method is still used to make fluorine today.

Moissan also worked with heat. He helped build an electric arc furnace. This is a tool that makes very high heat. He used it to try and make man-made diamonds.

He also studied bits of a meteorite from Arizona. He found a tiny new mineral in those rocks. This mineral is made of silicon carbide. In 1905, people named it moissanite to honor him. For his work with fluorine, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1906. He died in 1907 from appendicitis.
