He is widely recognized as a founder of modern management methods. His specific set of ideas is often called Fayolism. This theory provides a comprehensive way to understand how large organizations function. Fayol believed that management was a skill that could be studied and taught. His work helped transform how businesses are organized and led around the world.

Fayol developed his administrative theory through years of practical experience in the mining industry. He spent much of his career at the Compagnie de Commentry-Fourchambault-Decazeville. During his time there, he studied complex issues like underground fires and coal bed formation. He eventually became the managing director of the firm. At that time, the company was facing bankruptcy. Fayol presented a restoration plan to the board, which they accepted. His leadership turned the company into one of the largest industrial combines in Europe by the time he retired in 1918.

To explain how a company works, Fayol identified six distinct types of organizational activity. These include technical activities and commercial activities. He also noted financial activities and security activities. Additionally, he included accounting activities and managerial activities. He believed that management was just one of these essential parts. By separating these activities, leaders could better understand the different needs of an industrial undertaking.

Within the specific area of management, Fayol identified five primary functions. These functions are planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling. Planning involves looking ahead to set goals. Organizing involves arranging resources and people to meet those goals. Commanding involves giving direction to employees. Coordinating ensures that all parts of the organization work together smoothly. Finally, controlling involves receiving feedback about a process. This allows a manager to analyze deviations and make necessary adjustments to keep things on track.

Fayol also proposed fourteen principles of management to guide leaders and employees. One key principle is the division of work, which encourages specialization. When employees focus on specific tasks, they become more accurate and faster. He also emphasized authority and responsibility, noting that authority gives managers the right to give orders. Another principle is the unity of command, which states that every employee should receive orders from only one superior. He also promoted the idea of equity, which means treating all employees with justice and kindness.

To help organizations communicate, Fayol described the scalar chain. This is the line of authority that runs from top management down to the lowest ranks. While communication should generally follow this chain, Fayol recognized that it could sometimes cause delays. To solve this, he suggested the concept of a "Gang Plank." This allows two subordinates at the same level to communicate directly during an emergency. This helps avoid long delays in the official chain of command.

Fayol first promoted his management ideas in his 1916 book, Administration Industrielle et Générale. This was published around the same time as Frederick Winslow Taylor's work on scientific management. While Taylor focused on different methods, Fayol is credited with developing his theory independently. His work became even more famous globally after a 1949 English translation. This translation helped establish him as a major authority on management, especially in the United States. His legacy continues to influence how modern companies are structured today.
